the judge

the verdict is in
condemning the sin
where one lost his head
another lay dead
and I must now choose
what part one should lose
of the life that remains

a life that before
some argue meant more
than the weight of the deed
and the case that they plead
in most measures true
cannot now undo
the loss or its pains

nor the tears in the eyes
of the family that cries
whose anger, confessed
whose hurt, here expressed
touch hearts, captivate
and hang like a weight
till one’s leniency strains

and my judgment sown
from all that’s made known
flies nothing from loss
its poor albatross
encircling all
for whatever befall
there’s none whose soul gains
